The student dormitory is a new building with 98 apartments and an area of approx. 260 sq. ft. each. The rooms and the floor are modern and clean in appearance. Because work shoes, hard heels or baggage castors put a strain on the floor every day, the flooring must be particularly resistant, long-wearing and easy to clean. Accordingly, a vinyl floor is provided in the apartments and linoleum is planned for the corridors.

The secret of every floor is the quality of its substrate. Even if a vinyl floor is usually problem-free, in its later use, unevenness in the substrate during the construction can be seen directly on the surface. This not only looks unprofessional, but also puts a special strain on the flooring in these areas and can even lead to cracking.

Even for the experienced master craftsman, the task was to apply a self-leveling floor filler to the screed before laying the upper floors. The total area covered about 32,000 sq.ft. for the rooms and corridors and required about 10 tons of filling compound, equivalent to 400 bags of 50 lb each.

When larger floor areas require the application of self-leveling fillers, the material is often prepared and transported by means of continuous mixers and feed pumps. For smaller construction jobs, the use of this machine technology is usually not economical. The cost of transporting and cleaning the systems is disproportionate to the result. As a rule, manual agitators are used. The result is often not the best, because depending on the size of the project, an employee is not only occupied with mixing but also preparing the material.

Mixing and application in one operation

The LevMix 65 from Collomix has been specially designed for the processing and simultaneous application of moving material. In combination with a dust extraction system, it can be used in closed rooms for dust-free work. Its frame, built on rollers, enables the mixing and spreading of material to be carried out not only in one operation, but also by a single person.

The advantages of the LevMix 65 were obvious when processing the leveling material and spreading it out in the apartment rooms. For the mixing process, 5 gallons of water was added to the mixer, then three bags of material.(50 lb each)with the mixer turned on. The mixing time was two minutes. Afterwards, the mixture must set-up briefly and is mixed again, briefly.

The completed leveling material is transported directly to the work site with the LevMix 65. By means of the tilting feature and the pouring spout, the leveling material can be poured out accurately and precisely.

The material was spread out at several points in the room and extended to a height of one inch with a squeegee. The smooth filling compound was then compacted again with the spiked roller. The result was a perfectly smooth surface without unmixed material or bubbles.

The first six rooms were finished by two people within 45 minutes without breaking a sweat! Only one batch per apartment was needed.

Special mixer for thorough mixing

High shear forces thoroughly break down the mixture of powder and water and ensure an intensive, continuous wetting of the material. This allows the properties of the filler to unfold best. This supports processing and ensures the desired quality.”

The high mobility of the LevMix 65 makes working on the construction site much easier. You can mix close to the point of use and the spreading of the material is done by one person without much effort. The hauling of heavy buckets is no longer necessary, so there is no more back strain for the employees.

For most experienced Tradesmen, this method on small and medium-sized surface jobs has also shown that the LevMix 65 from Collomix has clear advantages over the use of mixing pumps.
